Townes Van Zandt - Live At The Old Quarter, Houston, Texas
It's important to know your roots, and that's why from time to time I like to share my favorite older records. Today's featured artist/LP is Townes Van Zandt - Live At The Old Quarter, Houston, Texas.
For those who don't know much about Townes Van Zandt, he was a country-folk music singer-songwriter, performer, and poet. While alive, Van Zandt was labeled as a cult musician; though he had a small and devoted fan-base, he never released a "commercially successful" album or single, and even had difficulty keeping his recordings in print. Ironically, in 1983, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard's cover of his song "Pancho and Lefty" achieved number one hit status on the billboard country music charts. The bulk of his life was spent touring bar circuits and living in cheap motels, backwoods cabins, and on friends' couches. Not surprisingly, his rough lifestyle lead to drug addiction and a battle with psychological illness. On New Years Day 1997, Van Zandt died from the many years of substance abuse. He was 52. Thanks to a couple books, a documentary, and a large list of his songs being cover, Townes Van Zandt become increasingly popular throughout the 2000's.

For quite some time, I thought that I didn't like Townes Van Zandt, however, this was before I listened to Live At The Old Quarter. This album is a double live album recorded from a series of performances at The Old Quarter in Houston, Texas early in his career (1973). Unlike much of his other recorded material, this album captures the more intimate side of Townes Van Zandt. If you have either like him or disliked him in the past, I suggest you try this album. He Takes the stage alone, the crowd is silent, and the only accompaniment is his acoustic guitar.
I've provided a couple tracks to sample, or the entire album is available for download from this link: ***D*o*w*n*l*o*a*d***. Enjoy.
